SA ENTREPRENEUR SCOOPS EMEA INNOVATOR AWARD

 

4 June 2015: The Holmes Report has named Elian Wiener, entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer of Epic MSLGROUP - one of South Africa’s leading strategic communications and PR agencies - as one of the top 25 innovators in the communications industry in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The Holmes Group is the world’s foremost provider of insight, knowledge and recognition to the public relations industry.

Wiener is the only South African in the EMEA region to be recognised as an individual who is shaping the future of the communications industry, with over half of the innovators coming from the UK and the remaining from France, Sweden and Norway.

The Holmes Report Innovator 25 EMEA class takes a glimpse at the communications industry’s future, shining a light on individuals who are determining what influence and engagement will look like tomorrow. The people recognised for this award come from various corners of the industry – creative strategy, digital execution, influencer mapping, storytelling – but all together they represent a compelling picture of what marketing and communications represents in the modern era.

Wiener started his strategic communications and PR agency, then known as Epic Communications, in 2009 with just R350 000 in the middle of a depressed economy and in just five years turned it into one of the smartest and most successful consultancies in EMEA. As a result of its success, Paris Stock Exchange Listed Publicis Groupe acquired the company earlier this year to form part of its communications organisation, MSLGROUP.

Commenting on the award, Wiener says that from the start, he deliberately implemented innovations that wold differentiate the agency from its competitors. “These included creating a newsroom atmosphere with daily editorial meetings and topical issues awareness sessions and presentations. More recently, in response to the changing nature of the industry that has seen a shift towards integrated communications strategies, I took the decision to completely restructure the agency. We dismantled the silo approach we had been following and integrated all our digital, traditional PR, internal and stakeholder management teams into multi-skilled teams that can conceptualise and execute on strategies from the top down to ensure clients achieve their overall objectives.”

Wiener says the key to success lies in being completely passionate about the ideas or change one wants to introduce. “Change is hard for some people, so they need to be inspired."
