Letter from the MD
January 2013: Having survived the somewhat overhyped Mayan prediction of an apocalypse and having sailed unscathed into the new year, this is an opportune time to provide you with a quick update on developments at Epic Communications as well as some clarity on what you can expect from the agency in 2013.
We have continued on our strong growth path, adding several new clients across our traditional PR and Digital divisions. These include clients operating in the pharmaceutical, logistics, airline, legal, financial and FMCG sectors.
We have also maintained our focus on providing great service to existing clients, resulting in over 90% of retainer clients re-signing for 2013 and maintaining our high client audit ratings, achieving an average client satisfaction rating of over 80%.
This helped Epic Communications to be nominated as one of three finalists in the 2012 Finweek/Adreview PR Agency of the Year Awards. Although the competition judges took the somewhat bizarre decision not to declare a winner, we believe our nomination is a great achievement, given that we are still a relatively new agency.
We have used the growth as an opportunity to bring in some of the best talent available in the industry and have bulked up our traditional PR and Digital teams considerably.
According to the Finweek Adreview 2012 rankings, Epic Communications is now the largest independent PR agency in South Africa based on revenue and staff numbers, servicing over 40 retainer clients across our Johannesburg and Cape Town offices.
Although we are pleased with the continued growth of the agency, we remain committed to our objective of being the most highly regarded strategic communications and PR agency in South Africa in terms of enabling our clients to reach their business objectives through effective communications.
During the latter part of 2012, the epiccommunications.co.za website was re-launched with the objectives of improving the look and feel of the site as well as our position on google and other search engines. Through a combination of the site rebuild, effective SEO activities and increased online PR exposure, we have met and even exceeded our objectives – go on, do a google search for PR agencies in South Africa.
Other highlights for the agency include formalising affiliate agency agreements in East and West Africa as well as improving in our BEE rating from Level 4 to Level 3.
Our progress as an agency is also being fuelled by the speed at which our industry is evolving, which is providing us with huge opportunities to identify and deliver creative and effective strategies, services and campaigns, using a plethora of new channels.
With our new media division – Epic Digital – rolling out several innovative campaigns (see “The Rise and Rise of Digital”), as well as the enhancement of our brand strategy and design capacities, we truly believe we now have the skills and capabilities to call ourselves a full service strategic communications agency.
This is a critical development for the agency as I firmly believe that successful agencies of the future will be those best able to conceptualise and implement integrated communications campaigns for clients across multiple channels.
We look forward to pitching some exciting new campaigns to you along these lines.
Thank you to all our clients for providing us with the opportunity to work with you and your brands.
MD, Epic Communications
